Jordan Peele’s highly anticipated horror film Us has slashed box office records, boasting the best-ever opening weekend of any original horror film. Rolling Stone reports that Us brought in $70 million, nearly doubling the expected debut and toppling the previous record holder, A Quiet Place. The film also had the best opening weekend for an R-rated movie since 2012’s buddy comedy Ted. Us’s $70 million was more than double the opening weekend total for Peele’s first horror film, the critically acclaimed Get Out. “Put simply, Jordan Peele is a genius,” Universal’s president of domestic distribution told Variety. “He’s managed to tap into something that the domestic box office can’t get enough of. People can’t wait to see what he does next.”
